Elastic (Raman) thermobarometry

Elastic thermobarometry determines the conditions of entrapment of mineral inclusions in their host, by measuring the residual pressure of inclusions and applying elastic modeling. It offers a complementary approach to conventional thermobarometry for determining the P–T conditions of metamorphism and diamond formation. In my research, I contributed to advancing this method by incorporating the effects of elastic anisotropy, non-linear elasticity and the complex geometries of natural host–inclusion systems. The resulting software is available here.

Upon exhumation and cooling of rocks in geodynamic processes, minerals trapped as inclusions within other host minerals develop over- or under-pressures due to contrasts in their thermoelastic properties. Knowing the equations of state and elastic properties of minerals, elastic thermobarometry inverts the measured residual pressure (or strains) of the inclusion to determine the possible pressure-temperature conditions of inclusion entrapment.

Elastic thermobarometry differs fundamentally from conventional thermobarometry as it does not rely on the assumption of chemical equilibrium between phases. Therefore, it provides a complementary method to unravel P–T conditions of metamorphism and diamond formation.


Most elastic geobarometric models assume that both the host and inclusion are elastically isotropic and have an ideal geometry (the inclusion is spherical and isolated at the center of an infinite host). These conditions do not commonly occur in natural rocks. Using finite element analysis, I quantified how deviations from the ideal geometry influence thermobarometric calculations and provided corresponding corrections.
